How to Winterize Outdoor Faucets and Sprinkler Systems

by Allen Deaver – Asset Realty, Serving Central Texas Homeowners

Even in Central Texas — where winter typically brings just a handful of freezing nights — a sudden cold snap can still cause serious damage to your outdoor plumbing. Frozen pipes can burst, leading to costly repairs and water waste. The good news? With a little preparation, you can protect your home’s faucets and sprinkler systems before the temperatures drop.

Here’s a simple guide to help keep your Central Texas property safe this winter:

Protect Your Outdoor Faucets

Disconnect Hoses
Remove any attached garden hoses. Water trapped in the hose can freeze and back up into the faucet and pipes.
Shut Off Exterior Water Valves
If your home has shut-off valves for outdoor faucets, turn them off. Then open the outside faucet to allow remaining water to drain.
Insulate Exposed Faucets
Use a faucet insulation cover or wrap the faucet with thick foam pipe insulation and tape. These inexpensive products prevent freezing and cracking.
Check for Leaks
Ensure faucets are fully sealed after draining. Small leaks can allow water to freeze and expand inside your pipes.

Winterizing Your Sprinkler System

Shut Off the Water Supply
Locate the main valve to your irrigation system and turn it off before the first freeze.
Drain Remaining Water
Depending on your system:

Manual drain valves: Open them to clear trapped water.
Automatic drain systems: They drain themselves once pressure drops.
Blow-out method: A professional uses compressed air to clear the lines — highly recommended for large systems.
Wrap any exposed pipes, valves, or the backflow preventer with insulation or insulated tape. A frozen backflow device is one of the most common — and expensive — winter damage repairs.
Disable Timers
Turn your irrigation controller to “off” or “rain mode” so the system doesn’t accidentally activate.

Don’t Let Mild Winters Fool You

Central Texas may not see weeks of freezing temperatures, but even a hard freeze that lasts a few hours can cause burst pipes and costly water leaks. A quick afternoon of winterizing can save you thousands in repairs — and the headache of dealing with insurance claims.
